Arsenal’s Striker Saga: Why the Gunners Chose Viktor Gyokeres Over Benjamin Sesko

Arsenal have reportedly made significant progress in their pursuit of a top striker this summer, entering advanced talks with Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyokeres. After another season without silverware, Mikel Arteta’s side is eager to bolster their attack and finally clinch their first Premier League title in over two decades.

Two Strikers, One Spot: Gyokeres vs Sesko

Initially, Arsenal were weighing up moves for two primary targets: Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko. Both strikers fit Arteta’s pro file, young, powerful, and prolific, but ultimately, Arsenal turned their full attention to Gyokeres, 27, after complications arose in negotiations for Sesko.

Reports from Portugal suggest Arsenal “definitively abandoned” a deal for Sesko after RB Leipzig demanded €80 million, including €40 million up front—figures that Arsenal weren’t willing to meet. Personal terms between Sesko and Arsenal had also hit a stalemate, leading the club to shift focus.

In contrast, Gyokeres had already agreed to personal terms on a five-year deal. Arsenal are reportedly offering €65 million plus €15 million in add-ons, though Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas is said to want the full €70 million before any bonuses are added.

What Makes Gyokeres the Right Fit?

Gyokeres impressed last season in the Portuguese league, and his physical style and consistent scoring make him an ideal candidate to lead the line at the Emirates. With pre-season friendlies approaching, Arteta is keen to finalise the striker deal quickly, giving the new arrival time to adapt before the new season kicks off.

This move also follows Arsenal’s earlier signing of Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad for £60 million. The 26-year-old has signed a five-year contract and is expected to bring calmness, tactical intelligence, and creativity to the Gunners’ midfield. Zubimendi turned down advances from Liverpool and Manchester City to join Arteta’s project in North London.

The Bigger Picture

These signings reflect Arsenal’s ambition to challenge Manchester City and Liverpool not only for the league title but also in Europe. By targeting players with high football IQ and experience at top levels, the Gunners are building a squad designed for consistency, strength, and style.

Still, the Gyokeres deal isn’t done yet and with rival clubs watching closely, Arsenal must act fast to seal the deal and avoid a last-minute hijack.
